Topic #1: Culture Shock

I am an international student, and I have lived in the U.S. since 2007.
I was really worry about possession of "GUN" when I came U.S. because in my country, Japan, having gun is completely illegal. Polices and few people who allowed to have gun to hunt wild dangerous animals have gun lawful. Even they have rights, getting permission is very complicated and careful.  I felt to have gun has many risks for many people. Even if it is for self-defense from any crimes, I think having gun exceeds the limit of "power".
First time, I wondered why Americans do not worry about gun because the person who walking next to you on the street might have a gun!!! In this case, I was so rude because I know nothing about the rule of the gun in the U.S. but I wa
I know many people feel my opinion does not get the point why U.S. government created this gun possession system. However, I have never touched (even seen) real gun since I came in to the U.S. I grew up in the society which does not allow the gun and we have a stereotype that the gun is kind of symbol of "Bad".
Now I'm feel much better for having gun because I'm getting used to seeing the gun than when I came is the U.S. first, but I'm still worrying about it little bit... It is very hard to change my own standards and stereotype.
This is the biggest issue about the Culture Shock in my life.

  1. Dear Naohiro,

I’m glad to hear about your experiences here in the U.S. because Japan is so very different from where we live. Having guns here in the U.S. is deeply rooted in our culture as a nation. While it’s people that kill people, not guns, they certainly play a large role in the process. It’s almost no different than walking around with a stick in Japan as the police do or a sward as Samurai did in feudal times.

    All the best,

    Juelz

  2. Hi,
I had no idea it was illegal to have a gun in Japan. While American Constitution gives a right to bare arms, it doesn't exactly specify the purpose of owning one. One who ones a gun takes an enormous responsibility, and should be aware of risks and consequences. Unfortunately gun availability is associated with accidental death by shooting, especially in children.

  3. Hey,
I agree with you that the right to bare arms in not up to date and when written long time ago carrying a gun was necessery.
nowdays,I don't think carrying a gun should be allowed since it is dangerous and make criminals an easy life.
I believe that noone besides Security forces or army should be allowed to carry guns.

  4. as mentioned like the others, i didn't know it was illegal to carry guns in japan. i guess they're really strict on people carrying guns because they dont want things that happen in america such as robbery to happen. i actually think it's a very good idea that japan enforces a rule like that because so many people in america carry guns and they don't have a good reason to carry one. many people carry one and say that they have one because it protects them. however, i believe there are so many other ways to protect yourself, other than having a gun. even police sometimes abuses their right and uses their gun when unnecessary.
